If there is anything that I have learned over the last few decades, it’s that I can’t seem to stretch time. There are only 24 hours in every day and no matter how hard I try, it’s impossible to make more. So, I have given up trying to stretch the time and have tried to work smarter and more efficiently. Sometimes I am successful. Other times, I am a work in progress.
One thing I have learned is to try to balance work, family time and personal interest. I spent several years with a coaching company that tried to promote the value of free time – unplugging from all things work-related for 24 hours (including emails and texts!). I still haven’t begun to master that, but I have tried to carve out some time to help those who need a hand.
Many people know about my participation (professionally and my ballet debuts) with Le Ballet Petit. Prompted by my daughter’s interest in ballet, this was a great way for us to spend some time together and have our very own activity. Now that she has entered college and abandoned me, I have a few more “minutes” to devote. While I enjoy trying new things (aka dance), I also enjoy using my professional skills to help people who have not had a great head start in life. I recently became involved with Matanya’s Hope a non-profit organization based in the USA and Kenya East Africa focused on eradicating poverty by educating Kenya’s children for a future that provides life-sustaining programs and opportunities. I was invited to join the Board and serve as Treasurer. For a few hours a month, the “work” is minimal compared to the rewards.
While you may have a passion or interest that may not exactly fit your skills, you can always use your business skills to be involved, give back and enjoy from the sidelines. Many times, rewards, connections and new friends come from where you least expect them!
It would be our pleasure to discuss your business, tax and/or estate planning needs.
